Marisol here. I know that Loren (my husband) is the baker and that he’s the face of the business, but I thought I’d write a post and get my voice out. Actually, the business was all his idea and since I didn’t want to micromanage or take over, I told him that I was going to stay out of it. Completely. Then… he added me as “co-owner” to the paperwork.
To be clear, it’s not that I didn’t want to be involved and get to know all of you. It’s just that one of us had to “bring home the bacon,” so to say, and keep our family afloat while Loren got this business off the ground. Plus, I love my students and being part of the teaching community.
That said, I wanted to take a moment and reflect on how much I LOVE WORKING in OUR shop! This Saturday, epitomized the joy I get from being at the shop.
I met Steve, who was just going about Saturday routine of buying bagels and running errands. YES! We’ve made it onto someone’s routine!
I met two of my students’ parents for the first time and had fantastic conversations with both of them. With one we discussed our shared experience of having lived in Vancouver and with the other, we discussed our times in China and it turned out that she would have visited my school in China, while I was teaching there! What a small world! During both of these conversations, I had to force myself to stop. I was just having such a great time!
Later, we met Jan and Glen. Jan was our third EVER customer. I remember him driving in and helping me secure balloons to our fence. I also remember him telling me how he had previously lived in Toronto (where Montreal-style bagels are readily available) and that he was so excited to try our bagels. It was so lovely to see him again and to get to know Glen this time around. I could have kept chatting forever!
And really… that’s where I get my joy. It’s from talking with all of you and getting to know you all. I know Loren feels the same. We love getting to know our community. With our shop we desire to build on community, support community and to really get to know all of you.
So please tell us your name. Don’t be shy! I’ll try my best to remember them, but as my Intro Spanish class can attest to, I’m atrocious with names! But I will write them down, and do tell us again and again, until we learn them!
Thank you for welcoming us into your community! We can’t wait to chat with you some more!
